World Strongman contender Nick Best provides an update on his hip replacements and recovery
“The Grandfather of Strongman,” Nick Best, is known for his elite strength and longevity across several decades. Best recently shared his recovery updates on Instagram after a complication ruined his recovery process.
“Well, starting back off at square one, but it’s gonna be good in the end. It’s gonna be fine, so just my right leg’s not as strong as my left leg. But it’s gonna be okay. Just gonna take some more time,” said Best with a smile.
According to the video shared by Nick, he was forced to undergo a second surgery soon after undergoing bilateral hip replacement surgery in early June 2025. Post-operative infection on his right hip restarted his ongoing recovery process, including physical therapy and rehabilitation. However, Best remains committed to taking his recovery a day at a time.
Years of brutal training and wear and tear due to elite strength sports led to Best experiencing chronic pain and limited mobility. Furthermore, his hip joints had worn down severely. The best option for him was to undergo bilateral hip replacement surgery.
Although the surgery itself was successful, his setback due to the post-surgery infection was unprecedented.
However, fans are inspired seeing Best’s optimism and strength as he shares updates on his physical therapy. From hip and glute strengthening to walking and gait retraining, it is going to be a long journey for Best.
Nick Best shares his tips for training smarter and avoiding injury
Few men can compare to powerlifter and strongman, Best, in terms of strength sports. Winning several titles as both a powerlifter and a strongman, Best has seen the best and the worst of strength sports.
During an interview with Men’s Health, Best, now 57 years old, shared some incredible advice that can help others prevent injury while strength training.
“Don’t be in a rush. Don’t overtrain,” he said.“Train smarter, not necessarily harder. Outworking everyone else isn’t the smart way to go. You can still work hard, but do so with control.”
He further elaborated on the importance of rest and recovery. The primary things to focus on are-
- Stretching
- Walking
- Moving during sets
- Get bi-weekly massages
- Adequate sleep
“Your body will tell you when it needs to rest. It’s your job to figure it out and listen to it,” he shared.
Coming from Best, these are some of the most invaluable pieces of advice anyone could ask for.
Do you think Best will bounce back stronger than ever after his recovery?
