Steve Austin Once Urged Gym Beginners To Avoid Intense Workouts: “Start With Basics”
When a wrestling legend like Stone Cold Steve Austin gives you training advice, you'd better leave everything and listen.
During an interview with Mike O'Hearn, the Texas Rattlesnake shared some of his knowledge on fitness that everyone needs to hear.
"Start with the basics, and then you know, like, okay, you want to start getting in shape. Hey man, don't just start training 7 days a week with high levels of volume or high-intensity cardio every single day.
"So just don't just jump all in, you know, getting in shape or maintaining a physique, that is a marathon."

With this message, Austin aimed to emphasize the importance of starting training with the basics instead of immediately jumping into high-intensity cardio sessions. According to him, easing into exercises is a much better option. Otherwise, it can lead to burnout or injury.
Throughout the interview, both Austin and O'Hearn put extra stress on consistency and why it is the ultimate way to achieve long-term success. Austin revealed that his own career was built on this approach.
Long before he became the greatest WWE superstar (ranked by Sports Illustrated), he spent years building a perfect athletic body. He did that with the help of weight training, athletics, and discipline. Training has been a part of his life even after multiple injuries, surgeries, and retirement.
The topic then shifted towards Austin's diet approach, where he explained how some people have the tendency to look for shortcuts like supplements, fad diets, and miracle solutions.
Although he admitted to the fact that supplements contribute to building muscles, he highlighted that proper nutrition remains the true foundation of physical development.
Steve Austin’s simple diet advice
During their discussion, O'Hearn mentioned that the first question his clients ask when he gives them a nutrition plan is usually about supplements. They ask, “Okay, so what vitamins do you want me on? How much cardio do you want me?”
O'Hearn, who feels frustrated over such questions, stated that he simply wants his clients to stick to diet basics. Austin added that before “micromanaging everything,” it’s better to “focus on your basics, eating your food groups.” He asked people to “get that lined up.”
And their claim is backed by Dr. Howard Sesso, an epidemiologist at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. When asked about this study, he answered, “It’s best to improve the diet before using supplements.”
According to Dr. Sesso, supplements like vitamins and minerals are most effective when eaten in a dietary form. He noted that besides the nutrients, natural foods contain other beneficial nutrients like carotenoids, flavonoids, minerals, and antioxidants, which are rarely seen in supplements.
